My Ovaries Didn't Make Me Do It: Hysteria and resistance in literature

  • Ferguson Room, National Library of Australia Parkes Place West Parkes, ACT, 2600 Australia (map)

Artists: Emma Rose Smith

When #MyOvariesMadeMeDoIt went viral, it seemed some feminists were keen to reclaim the term. But does hysteria actually offer the chance for resistance and solidarity? This lecture traces hysteria from Hippocrates through Freud and second-wave feminism, to contemporary queer and anti-colonial fiction. Rather than asking if a novel is 'hysterical' or 'resistant' or both, Emma Rose Smith will trace signs and symptoms and question their meaning.
